I can relate to that - the "no profits" part, anyhow. :-(
OTOH I don't depend on hosting to pay the mortgage.

Jay, first of all please don't top post.
I'm also with Ameritrade. When you talked to the manager, did she admit they had been giving out email addresses? If this is true then I will also call and ask for an explanation.
I've requested an explanation from client services, this is pretty bad. Unless Ameritrade surprises me, I expect I'll be finding an alternative service... if customer e-mail has been compromised, who knows what else is going on.

Please be sure to tell them why as you close your account.

I believe it is a good idea to be specific and adamant in explaining why they can kiss your asteroid. So many of these outfits believe that customer information is their proerty, to do with as they please. These kind need to know that passing around such information is not ok.
I would expect if you keep trying you'll eventually get something like this:
A junex (fresh suit, just out of college) "thought" that would be a good way to "help" the customers receive more "valuable services" from some of our "trusted associates," and besides, since everyone gets a lot of spam anyway, it really couldn't make much difference, could it? Why get upset? JHD!

My experience is that it's not just the passing around of informing, but once obtaining information, just assuming you want spam.
My case with Cingular was that they had no reason to send HTML as email, or really any email at all, as I merely needed to provide one to use their electronic service. Their counter was "well, I can do it in my emailer", to which my counter was "that doesn't make it right.". So, they stopped sending me HTML emails. Then I was complaining about their non-HTML emails. I think they put something obscene for everything to the left of the @ symbol for me. I simply blackholed their network via multiple methods.
AAA was similar to your example. I give them my email, then I get spam for it once my account expired. They sold it to a known spam farm, who refused to process remove requests. I don't know if it's stopped, but I did blacklist the email "From" address being used and I didn't see any entries in my logs in regards to this filter.

Because newbies hvae no clue about what people do or don't want. It seems the best practice is to impose until shut down. Better to cram it down our throats until we retaliate rather than politely ask. Really, if anyone gave a damn about their emailings for such offerings, people would sign up for it.
My philosophy: If I wanted it, I'd ask for it. I haven't asked, so therefore I don't want it. NEVER assume anything.

But that goes contrary to what marketing execs are taught in college: 'Marketing Professionals' are *trained* to know what people want.
They *know* what you want. They know it better than you do. The fault lies in your ignorance of what you want!

The fault lies in the laws that define "Marketing Professionals" as human beings, thus making it illegal to shoot them down in the street like any other dangerous, rabid mammal.

The marketing and legal professions require a removal of all ethical and moral sense as an initial qualifier. It's part of the initiation.

I asked Ameritrade the question of whether they give out email addresses to third parties. Here is their reply.

Their philosophy: If they can find you they can hammer you. If they hammer you they will eventually get a sale. Until then their masters will still pay them for hammering you.

You used the wrong phrasing; you should have asked if they give, sell trade or in any other ways pass on your address to third parties. ;^>

Personally, I'm still pissed he said "Marketing Professionals" and "human beings" in the same sentence. Hell, he even threw in "rabit mammal" too.

That's why I prefer to use the term "vermin". It's *always* open season on vermin ... and you don't need a license! ;^>

There are more ways of shooting an animal than with firearms. Most of them are silent, too.

Again, why insult the vermin by somehow indirectly associating them with "marketing professionals".
I think the problem is, whatever term is agreed upon, we'll(tinw) get a call from their anti-defamation league.

I have mice in my garage. Too much stuff, too many hiding places. Lots of construction. When I get my truck back, put the pro audio gear in that, then crank up the generator and seal up the garage for an hour by putting about half a gallon of gas in the generator. Wait for all to go silent, then use the remote to open the garage door.
Still, a fate too easy for a "marketing professional" or a spammer.

Rich,
Do you need any further indication that your efforts are welcome and valuable?
How many messages blocked from Bwadly equate to "Job well done!"?
A dozen?
Five?
One?
If Bwadly had more brains, it might be more of a challange to you. But since Bwadly's spam takes only about a half of an IQ point to block, you may feel your intellagance is wasted.
Instead, think of how many IQ points that are not wasted on his spew, rather than how many it takes to block the incompetent screwball.
